Year 9 & 10 Indonesian
Indonesian is an elective subject beyond Year 8 at Berwick Secondary College. At Year 9 & 10 students are given the opportunity to participate in cultural experiences which enhance their learning of the language.
Year 9 Indonesian
The year 9 course at the college is an elective subject.
Progressing from themes involving their personal life in the previous years, year 9 students take a look at the outside world within a communicative context. Students use the “Bagus Sekali 2” textbook in developing their macro skills through the following topics:
- Describing, enquiring about and predicting the weather; describe and give an opinion on various items of clothing; make suggestions regarding appropriate clothing for different occasions and weather conditions
- Identifying a variety of Indonesian fruits; entering and completing a bargaining process in purchasing fruits and other items at an Indonesian market, appraising the quality of fruits and using language structures to compare prices and qualities of fruits
- Learning about Indonesian wild and domestic animals; expressing feelings and using prepositions to give information about an animal’s whereabouts; enquire about a visit to the zoo/farm and using the appropriate time indicators to describe the event
- Visiting a major city and identifying buildings within the central business district; ask for and give directions in navigating through the city; using appropriate prepositions and ordinal numbers in describing the location of certain building, using the appropriate term of reference when speaking to certain groups of people
Students’ progress is monitored through several points such as reading comprehension, listening and writing tasks within the “Bagus Sekali 2” workbook. Short vocabulary tests are conducted regularly and each topic is concluded by an end-of-unit-test. Within a semester, students are required to complete four major tasks, each related to a specific topic discussed within the semester. The four tasks are:
- A written task comprising of a 2-day weather forecast for several cities, including suggestions for appropriate clothing for the weather described. The format of the task is typically a letter/article.
- A second written task where students are required to produce a brochure (hard copy or electronic) about a zoo that they are managing, promoting its animals and describing their location within the zoo. The brochure is to include a review of the zoo by visitors, describing their emotions whilst recounting their zoo experience
- A speaking task in the form of a role play where students are to act as either a shopper or a fruit seller at a market. Each role is needs to be performed in accordance to a budget and a shopping list that the students are given prior to completing the role play
- A cultural task where students do an analysis of an Indonesian motion picture, identifying the issues within Indonesian communities in general. Students are also exposed to a relatively realistic depiction of issues facing their peers in Indonesia
Yr 10 Indonesian
Indonesian language is an elective subject in year 10 and is studied for the whole year. Students who choose to do Indonesian in year 10 usually aim to continue on in years 11 and 12. Resources and activities developed and used by staff at Berwick Secondary College are available here for your use.
The text book for the Year 10 course is KEREN! Book 2 (Course book and Activity book). The topics studied include:
- Describing a dream home and the street they live in
- Going to an Indonesian restaurant
- Visiting a doctor
- Describing places to shop
- Visiting an Indonesian village and places of interest
Much of the course work is done primarily from the textbook, covering the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Assessment tasks include vocabulary tests, end of chapter tests, and assignments which focus more on writing and speaking skills.
Examples of assignments used for assessment at Year 10:
- My dream home (written piece) – Students use Microsoft Visio, a business and technical drawing program, to draw floorplans of their dream home. They must then use their Indonesian language skills to describe the features of that home. A sample of the student work produced for this assignment can be found here. The drawings from Visio, can be copy and pasted into Word for presentation.
- A food review (written piece) – Using FrontPage, students create a webpage that incorporates text and images to complete a review of an Indonesian Restaurant after a classroom visit. A sample of student work can be found here.
- Places of interests in Melbourne (oral) – Students are required to write scripts in Indonesian in order to create a documentary on places of interest to visit in Melbourne. On a classroom excursion to Melbourne the students film their segments and then edit their work using Microsoft Movie Maker.
