Year 7 & 8 Indonesian

Year 7
Kenalkan Saya
At year seven the focus in Indonesian is on realistic and meaningful communication, with students discussing their own worlds in Indonesian. In the semester the students work through 3 distinct areas using the textbook "Bagus Sekali 1". These are:
- Introducing themselves; interacting with other people; inviting people to eat and describing likes and dislikes
- Describing destinations; discovering the different types of transport and how to arrange to go somewhere
- How to describe fun activities they may participate in outside of school and how to tell the basics of time
Much of the course work is done primarily from the textbook, covering the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. This work leads to vocabulary tests that reinforce new language, and then a test at the end of each unit. In addition to these the following assessment tasks are completed.
- Written task that combines all elements of the first topic area. Students must produce a cartoon (paper based or electronic) where a number of characters meet, one is introduced to the others and they go out for a meal.
- A second written task where students produce a brochure for an imaginary city, outlining places to visit there and describing how you would travel to each one.
- An oral task where pairs or small groups plan an outing describing where they want to go, what time they'll meet and what activities they may do with an emphasis on those that they like.
- A cultural assignment that provides an introduction to aspects of the Indonesian culture. This is a link to the activity. Indonesian Fact Finding Mission. An example of student work produced for this activity can be found in this website.

Examples of assignments used for assessment at Year 8:
- My family (written piece) – Students are to describe their members of family, their age, their pet and their hobbies. They have a choice of either presenting their work using FrontPage or poster. A sample of the student work produced for this assignment can be found here.
- A day in my life (written piece) – Students are to describe their daily activities in the form of a storybook. The idea is then for them to present their story to primary school students.
- Indonesian volcanoes (a cultural assignment) – Students conduct their research on 3 volcanoes in Indonesia (using textbooks, encyclopedia and internet). For the draft, they are given a grid to fill in. Then, they may choose to either present their findings as a poster or using a power-point.
- Religions in Indonesia (a cultural assignment) - Students use the supporting website to assist them in producing a podcast that informs its listeners on the religions in Indonesia.
