Year 7 & 8 German
Languages are compulsory at our school in Years 7 & 8. At Year 7 all students complete a semester of German. In Year 8 students then choose which language they will follow on with. The language that they choose will be studied for the whole year.

Year 7
Ich bin ich, du bist du!
The introductory German course at Year 7 deals with basic linguistic skills and background information necessary for a person to:
- Give information about themselves and their family
- Talk about their hobbies and pets
- Talk about colours, games, numbers and seasons and
- Introduce others, especially their friends
Much of the course work is done primarily from a faculty produced textbook, covering the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. This work leads to vocabulary tests that reinforce new language, and then a test at the end of each unit.

Year 8
If students choose, German language is a compulsory subject in year 8 and is studied for the whole year. Resources and activities developed and used by staff at Berwick Secondary College are available here for your use.
The text book for the Year 8 course is Klasse 2 (Coursebook and Workbook). The Year 8 German course is divided into two distinct units which are described here.
Hallo! - Unit 1
In this unit the students develop basic linguistic skills necessary to:
- Give information about themselves and introduce others
- Discuss birthdays, people and festivals
- Discuss animals, pets and school
Students also learn:
- How to tell and ask for the time
- About the German School System
- How to talk about foods and eat out and
- About hobbies and excursions
Jeden Tag! - Unit 2
In this unit the students develop basic linguistic skills necessary for a person to discuss:
- Fashion and clothing
- Housing
- Nature and Environment
- Celebrations and festivals
- Travelling and TV Programs
Much of the course work is done primarily from the textbook, covering the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Assessment tasks include vocabulary tests, end of chapter tests, cultural assignments and language assignments which focus more on writing and speaking skills.
